Our Story
Gifu has one of the oldest Japanese ingredient food shop in Japan – Zeniya, which opened in 1832 and is currently run by the seventh generation of the Naganuma family to do so.
Zenbei Naganuma started his career working in a dried food store in Gifu, Japan around 1830. He enjoyed leading a simple life, but after learning that his wife was expecting their first child, he became more serious about providing his family with a better life so he started thinking about starting his own business.
From his experience, he understood that there was demand in Nagano and Kanazawa for certain dried foods, such as bonito, kelp, and shiitake mushrooms. Unfortunately, at the time, there was no easy transportation from Gifu, so Zenbei made his first trip to Nagano by foot. Carrying a large pack filled with dried food, he walked seven days to cross the mountain range between the two towns. During the trip, he was surprised by cold weather and at one point, resorted to pouring warm sake into his shoes to prevent frostbite.
After arriving at Nagano, he was welcomed by locals who were ecstatic to have the food that he had brought and after the initial success, he founded Zeniya in 1832. Though times have changed dramatically and the trip from Gifu to our customers is much quicker, we still proudly carry on the family tradition through seven generations to deliver delicious food and enjoy the same sense of satisfaction that Zenbei did from happy satisfied customers.
